Chinese jobs are growing in number worldwide, including in the United States. In fact, the economy in China is doing so well that the number of ex-pats from the West is ever increasing in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and others. It is not surprising that schools in the United States are offering bilingual education programs in Mandarin and English. Jobs for Chinese speakers are offered in nearly every field now. While they are still not as prevalent as Spanish jobs, there are plenty of openings for candidates who speak Mandarin, as well as Cantonese, and especially for individuals who have specialized skills in technology, the medical field, teaching, and other key areas.

In the past, Mandarin speakers gravitated toward Chinatown in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington DC to find jobs. These days candidates have many more choice geographically. Mandarin language programs are being adopted in more and more. As more speakers learn Mandarin, and as the economy of China gets stronger and stronger, many fields are requiring employees who can speak Mandarin, as well as Cantonese. Here are areas where Mandarin speakers are commonly sought for US jobs:

• Teaching and training
• Accounting
• Translation and linguistics
• Marketing




Knowledge of Chinese culture and history is also a benefit, as doing business with Eastern corporations, joint ventures, and branches of US companies in China becomes increasingly important. Knowing Mandarin or Cantonese language and culture not only helps Westerners navigate business dealings, and obviously, business trips, to China. In addition, when a Westerner knows the language and history of this ancient nation, this knowledge does not go overlooked or unappreciated by natives, which can always benefit both business and personal dealings. However, with the number of Chinese speakers in the United States, business trips to China are hardly needed to find a position for Mandarin speaking job seekers.
